Whiplash

Whiplash Treatment With Chiropractic Care

Whiplash is a severe neck strain and a common auto accident injury treated at North Port Chiropractic. It is also a non-obvious injury that may lead to neck pain and restricted neck movements. Our chiropractor serving North Port, Port Charlotte, West Village, FL, and surrounding areas can conduct an extensive evaluation to determine if you sustained underlying injuries. We will also select the appropriate chiropractic treatments to get you on the road to recovery.

What Causes Whiplash?

The injury gets its name from the "whipping" motion of the head and neck during a collision. The sudden impact forces the head forward then backward, causing the neck to extend and retract at rapid speed. The overextension of the neck damages the soft tissue surrounding the cervical spine. In some cases, the spinal bones and joints shift out of alignment, or a cervical disc may bulge or rupture.

Common Whiplash Symptoms?

Injuries from neck strain can cause a variety of symptoms. Neck pain is an indication that something is wrong, even if the pain is mild or develops days or weeks after the accident. Other common symptoms include:

  • Neck swelling, tenderness, or soreness
  • Dizziness or blurry vision
  • Limited neck mobility
  • Pain radiating from the neck to the upper back, shoulder, arm, or hand
  • Tingling, numbness, or weakness in the neck, shoulder, or arm (signs of nerve compression)
  • Headaches that start at the base of the skull

Chiropractic Care for Whiplash After an Auto Accident

Pain medication and a neck brace help to alleviate pain to some extent. A doctor may even recommend surgery in some instances. Chiropractic care is an effective non-drug, non-surgical approach because the focus is on treating the underlying injury.

Dr. Daniel Rubin can administer cervical adjustments to realign the spine in the neck. He may recommend full-spine adjustments to improve nervous system function. The treatment involves a hand or instrument-based technique that loosens up restricted joints, reduces inflammation, and increases neck mobility.

Spinal decompression therapy is another effective treatment and is particularly good for neck pain associated with a bulging or damaged cervical disc. Gentle distraction forces pull the vertebrae and increase disc space. The disc can shift back into position, thereby relieving pressure on the nerve.

Massage therapy, laser therapy, and corrective exercises are other modalities we may include in your treatment plan to reduce pain and inflammation, strengthen the muscles, and reestablish flexibility.
